I became a fur mom to our girl Hannah back in 2017. I always love spending time with her and doing special things. This year will be the first year that I now have two “doghters.” As we adopted our second dog Lady last month. Whether you are a dog mom yourself looking to celebrate with your fur baby, or looking for some great ideas for a special fur mom, these should give you some inspiration.

Did you know instantly that your dog was for you as soon as you saw them? When I first met Hannah at Richmond Animal Care and Control, I knew we were meant for each other! We saw a couple dogs first, who didn’t seem to be a good fit. Right before the shelter closed the volunteer said she had one more for us to meet. In walked this medium sized beagle mix. I definitely wasn’t thinking about adopting a hound. But, something seemed different about her. We went home to sleep on it and I couldn’t stop thinking about her all night. As soon as I woke up I told my husband I wanted to go back to get her.

Can we take a minute to talk about something almost every pet parent deals with? Although pet hair and odors are a small price to pay to have our furry ones at home with us, the fuzz and funky smells can sometimes seem overwhelming! My Hannah gets hair everywhere. Her hair isn’t quite as bad as Herc, the akita I grew up with. (I still think I find her hair in places it seems.)

Teaching kids how to communicate with pets is important. Understanding animal-talk requires teaching. Dogs and cats make all sorts of different sounds in different situations: growls, barks, meows, whimpers, whines, purrs etc. And their body language says a lot, too. It can be challenging for young kids to understand exactly what their pet is “telling” them.

Recently, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in pet adoption (of dogs in particular). I’ve been an avid supporter of animal rescue since long before I decided to become a pet photographer. Throughout high school and college I volunteered for shelters and rescues; helped raise puppies from a rescued pregnant lab and found homes for several animals.
